Dr. Mark Ware is the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of Canopy Growth Corporation. He is responsible for overseeing the development of Canopy’s medical research program. In the past two years at Canopy he has helped establish the Spectrum Therapeutics division of medical cannabis products, and as co-managing director of Spectrum he has built the Spectrum Therapeutics Applied Research (STAR) team responsible for supply and regulatory documentation, clinical development, medical affairs and global product safety. As CMO, Dr Ware advises on product safety as well as scientific, ethical and compassionate aspects of Canopy’s global research efforts.
Prior to joining Canopy, Dr Ware was tenured associate professor in the faculty of medicine at McGill University. He obtained his medical degree at the University of the West Indies and undertook training in internal medicine and secured a Master’s degree in epidemiology. He began evaluating the role of cannabis in pain management at McGill University in 1999, where he served as Director of Clinical Research of the Alan Edwards Pain Management Unit at the McGill University Health Centre for over 10 years. He was cofounder of the non-profit Canadian Consortium for the Investigation of Cannabinoids and served as Executive Director from 2007 -2018. He has advised the Canadian federal government on cannabis policy since 2001, and 2016, he served as the vice chair of the Federal Task Force on the Legalization and Regulation of Cannabis in Canada. He has over 100 publications on cannabis and pain in peer-reviewed journals and has spoken widely at national and international conferences on cannabis in medicine.
